Mendeley: how to import references

Importing references into your library means you can save them for future research, to later edit or share them, or to cite them in a paper.

Web of Science

  • Open a browser via Athena or with a VPN-connection.
  • Go to Web of Science and search for the reference(s) you want to import.
  • On the search results page, select the sources you want to import and click "Export" > "RIS (other reference software)". This will download a RIS file. You can download up to 1.000 references per download.
  • Open Mendeley Desktop. Drag the RIS file into your library. It'll now load the references into your library. You can also click "+ Add new" > "Import library" > "RIS (*.ris)" and look for the RIS file in the popup window.

Scopus

  • Open a browser via Athena or with a VPN-connection.
  • Go to Scopus and search for the reference(s) you want to import.
  • On the search results page, select the sources you want to import and click "Export" > "Mendeley". If you're logged in, this will import the references directly into your Mendeley library. You can import up to 2.000 references at once.

Google Scholar

Please note that you need a Google account to import references in bulk from Google Scholar. Your Google account doesn't have to be linked to your Ghent University account.

  • Open a browser via Athena or with a VPN-connection.
  • Go to Google Scholar and search for the reference(s) you want to import.
  • If you want to import one reference:
    • Click "Cite" under the desired reference, and then "RefMan". It'll download a RIS file that you can drag into your library. You can also click "+ Add new" > "Import library" > "RIS (*.ris)" and look for the RIS file in the popup window.
  • If you want to import multiple references at once:
    • Save the references to your Google library by clicking the star under each reference.
    • Then click "My Library" in the top right corner.
    • Now you can export all your saved references in bulk, or you can select a label and export all the references attached to that label. Do this by clicking "Export all" at the top. This will download a RIS file.
    • Drag the RIS file into your Mendeley library. You can also click "+ Add new" > "Import library" > "RIS (*.ris)" and look for the RIS file in the popup window.

From a publisher’s page

  • Open Mendeley. Click "Tools" > "Install Mendeley Web Importer".
  • A browser will open, asking you to install the plugin. Follow the steps.
  • In your browser, you should now see a red-and-white Mendeley icon. When you click it, it'll ask you to log into your Mendeley account. Do so.
  • Now it'll show you all the references it detects on a page. You can select the desired reference(s) and click "+ Add to Mendeley".
  • The references are now added to your Mendeley library. Please double-check your references after importing them; depending on where you imported them from, there might be errors in the reference.
