Hoe ervaar jij als onderzoeker academische vrijheid en intimidatie? | As a researcher, how do you experience academic freedom and intimidation?
De VLIR, de Vlaamse Interuniversitaire Raad, organiseert een bevraging onder academici over academische vrijheid en intimidatie van wetenschappers. We roepen graag alle wetenschappers van de UGent op om de bevraging in te vullen en zo hun stem te laten horen.
Waarover gaat de bevraging?
Academische vrijheid is één van de belangrijkste waarden van de UGent. Onderzoekers krijgen helaas tijdens de uitoefening van hun job soms af te rekenen met vormen van intimidatie, of ronduit zelfs bedreiging. De VLIR organiseert een bevraging aan alle Vlaamse universiteiten om een representatief beeld te krijgen van deze problematieken.
Wat wordt precies bedoeld met inbreuken op de academische vrijheid?
De scope van de bevraging is de volgende vraag: heb jij als academicus ooit intimidatie ervaren omwille van je job als onderzoeker, je resultaten, publicaties, onderzoekscommunicatie, de onderwerpen waarover je les geeft, ... waardoor je het gevoel kreeg dat je academische vrijheid beperkt werd?
Enkele voorbeelden van de bedoelde intimidatie zijn (vaak anonieme) aanvallen op sociale media (b.v. ‘trolling’), persoonlijke bedreigingen of beledigingen, (pogingen tot) chantage, enz. ten gevolge van je job als academicus.
Belangrijk om te weten is dat de opzet en het doel van deze VLIR-bevraging los staat van de recente problematieken van grensoverschrijdend gedrag aan diverse Vlaamse universiteiten.
Tot wie richt deze bevraging zich?
Tot alle academici, ook diegenen die nog nooit last hebben gehad van inbreuken, druk of intimidatie.
Waarom moet ik deelnemen aan deze bevraging?
Op basis van de respons van deze bevraging wordt bekeken of en welk evidence-based beleid nodig is om wetenschappers te helpen en ondersteunen in de manier waarop ze kunnen omgaan met inbreuken op hun academische vrijheid. Jouw ervaringen in dit beleidsvormend proces zijn dus nodig om mee het latere kader te bepalen dat kan uitgestippeld worden.

The VLIR, the Flemish Interuniversity Council, is organizing a survey among academics about academic freedom and intimidation of scientists.
What is the inquiry about?
Academic freedom is one of the most important values of Ghent University. Unfortunately, while performing their job, researchers sometimes have to deal with forms of intimidation, or even threats. The VLIR is organizing a survey of all Flemish universities to get a representative picture of these problems.
What exactly is meant by infringements of academic freedom?
The scope of the survey is the following question: have you, as an academic, ever experienced intimidation because of your job as a researcher, your results, publications, research communication, the topics you teach, ... which gave you the feeling that your academic freedom was restricted?
Some examples of the intended intimidation are (often anonymous) attacks on social media (e.g. 'trolling'), personal threats or insults, (attempted) blackmail, etc. as a result of your job as an academic.
It is important to know that the structure and purpose of this VLIR survey are independent of the recent problems of transgressive behavior at various Flemish universities.
Who is this inquiry aimed at?
To all academics, including those who have never experienced infractions, pressure or intimidation.
Why do I have to participate in this survey?
Based on the response to this survey, it will be examined whether and which evidence-based policy is needed to help and support scientists in the way in which they can deal with infringements of their academic freedom. Your experiences in this policy-making process are therefore necessary to help determine the later framework that can be mapped out.
