ENLIGHT Doctoral Network: Engaged Scientists/Citizens training at CU Bratislava

Engaged Scientists / citizens: training programme aimed at preparing PhD students for different career paths.

The ENLIGHT Alliance cooperates closely within academia as well as with surrounding socio-economic environment, obtaining skills in science communication, networking, and the ability to transfer knowledge into practice is a key for addressing major global, ecological, social, and economic challenges successfully.

In light of ENLIGHT's mission statement at Comenius, , we have prepared short-term doctoral training program designed to provide PhD students with a skillset necessary to empower scientist and learners to become more confident in becoming globally engaged citizens and embrace active roles both locally and globally  to address the five challenges of the ENLIGHT alliance..

The agenda of the training program offers three interactive webinars focussing on following core areas:

(1) Career development skills and strategies,

(2) Transferable skills, and

(3) Skills for transferring knowledge into practice.

1 - Career development skills and strategies: From invisibility to impact: science communication and social media as a career development tool

The importance of academic visibility is a vital component of each scientist's academic/scientific impact. In this webinar, we will concentrate on another asset – an ability to communicate research beyond the realm of academia and therefore broaden the impact of your research. Adopting social media for science communication is ideal to maximise the outreach of your research, expand your audience as well as boost networking with the community outside of academia. When applied correctly, it is also a highly effective tool for job search.

In this webinar we will cover topics:

- How to build your profile and communicate your research to a non-academic audience

- Presenting yourself and your competencies on social media

- How to deal with social media hate towards researchers

- How to use social media for networking and even job search

2 - Transferable skills: Networking for future impactful research teams

Networking is a vital skill for furthering your academic career. Some PhD students make the mistake of thinking that networking is only beneficial in the business world, but that's simply not true. Your academic network could include future colleagues, supervisors, or non-academic collaborators. In this webinar, we aim to showcase all the ENLIGHT-created tools helping early career researchers to build sustainable and lively networks within the ENLIGHT alliance.

In this webinar we will cover topics:

- How to enhance communication between the PhDs from all partner universities

- How to network outside of your department/institution/research field

- How to make use of ENLIGHT in-person and virtual mobility

3 - Skills for transferring knowledge into practice: Formulating policy-making recommendations

Training will be aimed at basic understanding policymaking processes and gaining insight into the interaction between the different patterns in which scientists, policymakers and politicians operate. It will help participants understand the complex task of providing the appropriate knowledge and services with confidence, skill, and respect for their scientific and institutional values.

In this webinar we will cover topics:

- How to reverse your research question/topic into policy issue

- How to prepare for engagement in this environment and what to expect from interactions with policy-makers
