Odysseus oproep 2024

Begin april opende FWO de nieuwe oproep in het Odysseusprogramma. Dit programma ondersteunt excellente onderzoekers, die buiten België een carrière hebben opgebouwd, een onderzoekslijn of onderzoeksgroep uit te bouwen aan een Vlaamse universiteit door hen een 5-jarige startfinanciering aan te bieden. De onthaalinstelling staat in voor de aanstelling van de mandaathouders.

De Odysseusoproep staat open voor twee types kandidaten:

Type I: Onderzoekers die internationaal erkend worden als toonaangevend en die reeds over een permanente academische aanstelling van minimaal 80% aan een buitenlandse onderzoeksinstelling beschikken. De startfinanciering van het FWO bedraagt: 2.000.000 euro tot 3.500.000 euro voor de periode van 5 jaar.
Type II: Onderzoekers die minimaal 3 jaar postdoctorale ervaring in het buitenland hebben en die het potentieel hebben om door te groeien tot een internationaal vooraanstaande positie. Zij hebben een maximale postdoctorale anciënniteit van 12 jaar. De startfinanciering van het FWO bedraagt: 500.000 euro tot 1.000.000 euro voor de periode van 5 jaar.

Voordracht kandidaten Universiteit Gent

De Universiteit Gent staat in voor het aanstellen van haar voorgedragen kandidaten die een toekenning krijgen van het FWO:

Mandaathouders type I worden benoemd als ZAP in de graad van hoogleraar of gewoon hoogleraar. De eerste 10 jaar wordt het ZAP-mandaat gefinancierd vanuit het BOF (BOF-ZAP mandaat), daarna staat de faculteit zelf in voor de financiering van het ZAP-mandaat.
Mandaathouders type II nemen de eerste vijf jaar een BOF-Tenure Track-mandaat op. Bij positieve evaluatie na 5 jaar wordt dit omgezet in een ZAP-benoeming in de graad van hoofddocent. De eerste 10 jaar wordt het ZAP-mandaat gefinancierd vanuit het BOF (BOF-ZAP mandaat), daarna staat de faculteit zelf in voor de financiering van het ZAP-mandaat.

Interne applicatie

Voor de interne selectieprocedure dient voor elke onderzoeker (zowel type I en II) een dossier in het Engels opgesteld te worden, bestaande uit de volgende elementen:

CV van de onderzoeker; inclusief bibliografie (de onderzoeker dient eveneens deze gegevens in het FWO e-loket te updaten);
Een schriftelijke bevestiging van de betrokken onderzoeker waarin de intentie om aan de Universiteit Gent een onderzoekscarrière verder uit te bouwen wordt verwoord;
Een onderzoeksplan, inclusief gemotiveerde begroting, voor de periode van vijf jaar (maximum 12 pagina’s);
Een bindende engagementsverklaring tot aanstelling bij toekenning van de genomineerde kandidaat, getekend door de decaan (zie FWO-richtlijnen).

Facultaire deadline

Enkel kandidaturen ingediend via een decaan worden aanvaard. Informeer tijdig bij het decanaat naar de interne indiendatum van de door jou gekozen faculteit.

De kandidaten die een uitgewerkt voorstel mogen indienen, ontvangen van de afdeling Onderzoekscoördinatie een unieke weblink met toegang tot het online aanvraagdossier. Daarnaast ontvangen zij de bindende engagementsverklaring, getekend door de rector. Deadline voor indiening bij het FWO is 30 september 2024 om 17:00 (Belgische tijd).

Odysseus call 2024

FWO launched a new call in the Odysseus programme. This programme supports outstanding researchers, who have built up a career outside Flanders, in developing or setting up a research line or research group within a Flemish university. Nominated researchers receive from FWO a start-up funding for five years. Ghent University accounts for the employment of these researchers.

The Odysseus programme is open to two types of candidates:

Researchers who are internationally recognized as pioneers in their field and who already have a permanent academic position of at least 80% at a foreign research institute. Research funding amounts to €400,000 to €700,000 per year (€2,000,000 to €3,500,000 for the 5-year period).
Researchers who have at least 3 years’ postdoctoral experience abroad and whose work has convinced leading colleagues in the field that they have potential to develop a leading international position. They have maximum 12 years postdoctoral seniority. The support ranges from €100,000 to €200,000 per year (€500,000 to €1,000,000 for the 5-year period).

Nomination candidates Ghent University

Successful UGent candidates benefit from a ZAP-appointment at Ghent University:

The first ten years, mandate holders type I take up a centrally funded BOF-ZAP-mandate and are afterwards financed by faculty staff points.
The first five years, mandate holders type II take up a BOF Tenure Track-mandate. Afterwards, in case of positive evaluation, they take up a non-renewable BOF Associate Professor mandate. Subsequently (from the 11th year) they are financed by faculty staff points.

Internal application

For each researcher (both type I and type II), the application (in English) consists of the following elements:

Curriculum Vitae of the researcher; including a bibliography (the researcher should update this information in the FWO e-portal as well);
A written confirmation in which the applicant states his/her intention to come over to Ghent University to continue his/her research career;
A research plan (maximum of 12 pages) and a detailed budget proposal for five years ;
A binding declaration of commitment to appoint the candidate in case he/she is nominated by FWO, signed by the dean (see FWO guidelines).

The Research Coordination Office will send the candidates who may submit a full proposal, a unique web link to access the online application file. Besides this, they will receive the binding declaration of commitment, signed by the rector. The deadline to submit at FWO is 30 September 2024 (5 PM Belgian time).
